One of the best players in the United States, Matt Poskay joins Drew University’s lacrosse program as an assistant coach for the 2009-10 season. A professional player, a member of the US National Team pool, an All-American and National Champion at Virginia and the national high school record holder with 362 goals, Poskay has already proven himself as an elite player at every level as he begins his collegiate coaching career with the Rangers and Head Coach Tom Leanos.
“We are obviously thrilled to have Matt join the Drew staff,” said Leanos. “His experience at the high school, collegiate, professional and national team levels will be invaluable as he takes over the Ranger offense. A great offensive mind and communicator, I am convinced he help all of our student-athletes reach a higher level of play."
An All-American and two-time National Champion at Virginia and the Cavaliers’ record holder for goals by a midfielder, the Clark, NJ native was selected in the second round of the 2006 Major Lacrosse League draft by the Boston Cannons following his five goal performance in Cavs NCAA title game win over UMass. In ’06, he led the Cannons in goals and was named the team’s Rookie of the Year. His ’07 season was even better as he was named a MLL All-Star and then preceded to win the MLL All-Star Game MVP. In ’08, he was again named to the MLL All-Star team while leading the Cannons with 34 goals.
His high school career at Arthur L. Johnson in Clark, NJ, was, too say the least, successful. He was a four-time first-team All-State and All-Conference selection and three-time conference player of the year. He set the national high school record with 362 goals while leading the state in scoring three times.
He graduated from the University of Virginia’s, McIntrie School of Commerce with honors in 2006. He was a United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Scholar All-American as well as an ACC Honor Roll selection three times.
