Horses have always mattered to Archie Cox. He arrived at Drew (from Friends Academy in his hometown of Locust Valley, New York) with a record of accomplishment as an equestrian-he had already competed on the national level as a junior rider, and in 1985 was the first male rider in 10 years to win the United States Equestrian Team Gold Medal.

By his sophomore year Cox was also riding for Drew's Equestrian Team, and he got off to a great start. At the 1989 Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Regional Championships he placed first in the Open Equitation on the Flat division. In the same year he qualified for the IHSA National Horse Show, competing in the same division. By winning this class, he became the first Drew equestrian to capture a National Championship title. In the same year, he led the Drew team to an IHSA Region I Reserve High Point College Award.

In the fall of 1990 Cox won many Open Flat and Open Fences classes at IHSA competitions, and led the team to a first-place finish in the IHSA Region I Championship. In his senior year, he was the 1991 leading trainer in the Zone 2 Hunter Finals. He placed second in Open Flat at the 1991 IHSA Regional Championship Horse Show, and led his team to third place in the IHSA Region I college standings. Along the way, he earned ribbons at the Medal Finals and the McClay Finals. This Daily Record Athlete of the Week received numerous IHSA High-Point Rider awards, and was Drew's College Alumni/ae Association 1990-91 Senior Male Athlete of the Year. Joan Greenberg, his coach at Drew, considers him one of the best riders she ever had.
