Drew's Fencing team opened its 2009-10 season with the Drew Invitational held in the Simon Forum on Saturday. The day-long event saw the women's team post a 5-1 record while the men went 3-2. Among the highlights was Alex Van Den Bergh and Alicia Rapp each going perfect for the day.
The women defeated Maryland, NJIT, Lafayette, SUNY-Stony Brook and USMA while falling to only Queen's College. Rapp led the way with a combined record of 16-0 (two bouts were not fenced). Her performance was crucial in the 15-12 win over USMA as the saber team provided the decisive points with a 6-3 weapon win. In fact, it was Rapp and the saber team that performed with the most consistency for the Rangers, losing only to SUNY and compiling a 41-13 record overall. Tracy Villaluz went 3-0 against Lafayette to help Drew to a 16-11 victory.
Allison Walters held the young epee squad together with a 13-2 record on the day. Her 3-0 record against USMA helped the Rangers to the slim victory. The senior won all three of her bouts in four matches. Anna Kasperowitz led the foilists with an 11-7 record.
On the men's side, three good wins were offset by a pair of tough losses. Both Cornell and NJIT defeated the Rangers by narrow scores of 15-12. The wins, on the other hand, were hefty ones. Drew defeated Hunter, 22-5, SUNY, 18-9, and USMA, 18-9. Van Den Bergh's big day helped the epee squad to a 4-1 record. The junior went a perfect 15-0 in his bouts as the epeeist went 34-11 overall. Shaun Geiger's 3-0 performance helped the Rangers take the match with Stony Brook.
Saber fencer Sulia Mason led his team to a 2-3 record. Mason's 10-5 overall record was the best of the team. The foil team went 3-2 on the day. Among the top performances were Scott Bransdorfer's 3-0 match against Stony Brook and Dillon Feigenbaum's 3-0 against USMA.
