Racing against strong competition at the Misericordia Cougar Classic, Drew women’s cross country placed eight of 12 schools. The men’s team did not fare as well, finishing 11th of 12 while missing its top runner, Steven Monteleone. Sarah Morris led the Rangers with a 42nd place finish.
Morris has made it three top-Ranger finishes in three attempts during her rookie season with Drew. The first-year scored 42nd while finishing 53rd overall of 97 competitors. Over the 5K course, Morris clocked a 22:11. Katherine Cross ran well to place second on the team and 50th overall with a 22:59. Ashley Walker came in two spots behind Cross at 23:05. Carley Thompson was close behind at 23:53 and Angela Vitellaro was the Rangers’ fifth runner at 27:24. As a team, the Rangers ranked eighth of 12, ahead of Lycoming, Baptist Bible, Keystone and Lackawanna. The meet featured three traditionally strong squads in Ithaca and Landmark heavyweights Susquehanna and Scranton. The Rangers were two spots behind Moravian, another of the Landmark’s top teams.
The men’s team fought to an 11th place finish. Zack Mower led the Rangers with a 34th place finish out of 122 runners. The freshman clocked a 30:07. Junior Andrew Ehlert came in 44th at 31:00 flat and rookie Tim Barnum came in 55th at 32:17. First-year Maxwell Rich placed 59th at 32:49 with Greg Del Russo clocking the Rangers’ fifth best time at 33:56. Thomas Kimelblatt, Michael Urculyo and Jigar Amin rounded out Drew’s eight competitors. Without Monteleone, who has led Drew in each meet so far this season, the Rangers finished in 11th with a 308 team score, but, working under the assumption that the sophomore would have again led the Rangers, with Monteleone Drew would likely have been battling for 8th or 9th place with a score around 268.
