A year after missing out on the playoffs due to the tiebreaking rules on a three-way knot, Drew field hockey took the backdoor into the Landmark tournament following a 4-0 loss at Susquehanna. Despite the setback, Drew squeezed into the playoffs as the fourth seed from a tie with Moravian and Scranton at 2-4 in the Landmark. The Rangers will face top seeded Juniata on Wednesday night.
Despite outshooting Susquehanna 17-15 in the game, Drew gave up three first half goals and another early in the second to fall to their heaviest defeat of the season. Andrea Fiori scored once and set up the game-winner for the Crusaders and Rebecca Entwistle scored twice. The Crusaders took the lead in the 20th minute through Heather Moore off Fiori’s assist. Susquehanna added two more in the final five minutes of the half with both Entwistle and Fiori both tallying prior to the break. Finally, four minutes after the restart Entwistle turned in Ally Bradley’s second assist of the game.
In the loss, keeper Stef Rutkowski played well making eight saves. Two of the goals came right after the senior made the initial save. The Rangers drew nine saves out of Susquehanna’s Erin Ferguson and came closest to getting on the board when Elizabeth Law’s shot was cleared off the line by defender Julia Amendola.
Even with the loss, the Rangers season continues, but with a very difficult task ahead of them. Drew travels out to two-time defending champions #17 Juniata on Wednesday night.
