Ranger Men Dominate MACFA Invitational

Drew men's fencing went 6-1 and a perfect 4-0 at the Middle Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Associations held at Drew on Sunday.  The Rangers posted victories over conference rivals USMA, Haverford, Cornell and Lafayette while also defeating Rutgers.   Drew's epee and foil squads both went 5-1 on the day.  The women's fencing team split their two matches, defeating Rutgers, but falling to Princeton.

The Rangers handily defeated a pair of teams, as they knocked off Cornell 21-6 and Lafayette, 24-3.  In the Cornell win all three squads posted 7-2 records while the foilists led the way against Lafayette with a 9-0 record.
Tight 15-12 wins over Rutgers and Haverford were secured thanks to the Rangers veteran epee squad.  Against Rutgers, epee's 8-1 performance won the match for Drew as the Scarlet Knights had won the other two weapons.  Alex Van Den Bergh swept his three bouts as did Tim Howes.

In one of the most important matches of the day, the Rangers defeated Haverford 15-12.  The Saber squad held their own taking four of nine bouts as both Max Pike and Sulia Mason won a pair.  The foilist won five bouts and the epeeists went 6-3 to secure the win.
The final MACFA match saw the Rangers defeat USMA, 16-12.  Max Pike, who finished the day 13-5, swept his bouts as did Mason, who posted a 13-3 record.  Epee went 5-4 as did foil.  Tim Howes finished his work for the day at 11-6 and Van Den Bergh posted a 10-4 record.  Ryan DiPeri went 9-6.

The foil squad's best effort of the day came against Princeton.  Though the Rangers lost the match 18-9, the foilists posted an impressive 7-2 win over the Ivy League power.  Didrik Etholm went 3-0 against the Tigers and 9-2 for the day.  Scott Bransdorfer went 1-2, but finished the day a solid 10-5.  Freshman Joren Madsen swept his bouts against Princeton while racking up a 15-2 record on the day.

The women's team split, defeating Rutgers 15-12 behind 3-0 records from Emma Nostrand and Naomi Bocarsly.  The women lost to Princeton 22-5, but did take three saber bouts, a good sign for the rest of the season.
