Suliarew men’s and women’s fencing swept the Drew Invitational on Sunday. The men’s team won all four of its matches to improve to 8-0 on the season while the women’s team’s two victories get them to 5-2 on the year. The Rangers also helped themselves in the standing of MACFA with Sunday’s performance.

The men picked up four big wins in the Rangers’ lone home meet of the season. The 16-11 win over Rutgers marks a key victory, in particular. Though the Rangers lost saber 5-4, one of just two weapon team losses on the day, the epee and foil squads picked up the slack. Alex Van Den Bergh spurred the epee squad to a 6-3 win with a 3-0 performance. In foil, Bagley Wright swept his three bouts en route to a 6-3 team win. In fact, Wright was perfect for the day for the Rangers.

The 20-7 win over Hunter saw the saber team pay the epee team back. Saber’s 9-0 helped counter a 5-4 loss by the epeeists. Sulia Mason was particularly effective winning all three of his bouts, as did Andy Murray.

A 20-7 win over the University of Maryland saw all three weapons perform well. Again Mason won his three bouts in saber and this time he was joined by Bardya Shirmohammadi in the accomplishing the feat. Alex Van Den Bergh and Bagley Wright each won all three of their bouts in epee and foil, respectively.

The highlights of the 23-4 win over St. John’s College were 3-0 from a four other Rangers. John Bone went 3-0 in epee, as did Mike Heumann. Joren Madsen posted a 3-0 record in foil and Jacob Hazle-Cary joined Mason in going 3-0.

The women got wins over FDU and Queen’s College. The epee team in particular performed well going a perfect 18-0 on the day as Naomi Bocarsly, Kate Galpin and Allison Walters each won all six of their bouts. The 19-8 win over FDU was highlighted by epee’s 9-0 sweep and a 7-2 win in saber. The saber team was lead by 3-0 shifts from Carlin MacNichol and Alicia Rapp. In the 23-4 win over Queen’s, the foil fencers got in on the act as Salina Miller and Anna Kasperowitz each won a pair of bouts. The epee and saber teams each won 9-0.
