Brown Double-Double Again Not Enough For Drew

The Drew University Rangers closed out their 2010 season with a 75-62 loss to the USMMA Mariners.  Sophomore Terrell Brown notched his fourth double-double of the season with 16 points,  15 rebounds as the Rangers fell to 7-18, 3-11 in the Landmark Conference.  The Mariners' Richard Roach matched with a double-double of his own, 13 points 10 rebounds and helped USMMA finish 21-4, 12-2 in the conference.

Senior Travis DeNapoli made his final game in Green and Blue count, putting the Ranger’s up by two, 5-3, 17:12 in.  The Mariners' leading scorer, Matt Hueber answered with back to back buckets in the paint.  Junior Tom Izzo gave the confident Mariners a 5-point advantage with 3-point basket off a smooth pass from senior Ryan Samuel.  The Rangers' sharpshooter, junior Kyle Joyce responded with a 3-pointer from NBA distance to tie things up at 10-10 just over 5:00 in.  Freshman Lucas Levenson, stood tough under the net the entire game, battled for rebound after rebound, finally worked his way to a lay-in putting the Rangers up by two.

Sophomore guard Jon Snead answered with five quick points and the rest of the game would belong to the Mariners.  Senior Chad Ray drilled a 3-pointer to stretch the Mariner lead to eight, 20-12 at 9:33.  Izzo followed with a quick deuce to make the lead ten, with 9:00 remaining in the half.

Ranger Junior Mike Mayes dished to Brown under the basket and Ranger fans thought they might see a comeback when DeNapoli found junior Nick Ganzfried on the perimeter for three.  But the Mariners once again responded with another Ray 3-pointer.  Ray would knock down his third 3-pointer of the half a few minutes later to give the Mariners a 36-21 advantage.  Samuel would score 8-10 for the Mariners as they closed out the first half up 43-27.

The Rangers would get within ten, 46-36 after Brown bucket, at 13:19, but the second half belonged to the Mariners.    Samuels squashed the Ranger comeback with yet another 3-pointer and the Mariners began to pull away, 53-38, with a Roach tip-in at 11:46.  Ray would finish with 12 points, Snead with 11 points three rebounds.

Mayes would close out the game for the Rangers with six consecutive points.  Mayes finished with 13 points, five assists, and five boards.  DeNapoli ended his career as a Ranger with nine points, two boards and a standing ovation from Ranger fans.

The Mariners will pick up where they left off this Wednesday, in Landmark Conference playoff action after play resumes and seeding is determined after today’s games conclude.

The Rangers will return their entire regular starting line-up to next year’s squad and hope to continue the steady improvement of the program under Head Coach, Darryl Keckler.
