RANGERS UPSET No.2 MOUNT SAINT VINCENT, 56-53, AND ADVANCE TO ECAC SEMI FINALS

The Drew Rangers improved their record to 15-11 after a victory against the No. 2-seeded Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins Wednesday night in Baldwin Gym with a final score of 56-53. Dana Cornato had a team high 14 points for the Rangers as they advanced to the semifinal round of the ECAC Metro Tournament.

The No. 7 seeded Rangers jumped out to a 10-6 lead just three minutes into the first half after freshman Eden Blazovic dropped in a quick eight points.  The game slowed to a crawl and stood at 10-9 for over three full minutes.  Drew picked up a six point advantage after senior Jessica Del Vecchio drained a three-pointer and followed with a quick jumper. The Dolphins came back quickly and were soon up by two after a Courtney Hesseman lay-in. Sophomore Danielle Barber responded for the Rangers with a smooth pull up jumper to even the score at 19-all.

Cornato sank her first three-pointer from Barber giving Drew a 27-26 lead.  The Dolphins responded again with two clutch free-throws from Karissa Koerner and took the lead 28-27.  Dolphin defense couldn't contain Cornato's hot hands as Barber found her in the baseline corner two more times.  Cornato mixed in a two-point bucket and scored the Rangers' final eleven points. Koerner threw down again, draining a deep three to close the half for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins retaliated with pressure as Drew took a 35-33 lead into the half. Double-teaming their opponent, the Dolphins forced a quick turnover and tied the game within one minute. Del Vecchio connected with Barber for a 3-point lead. After a failed trapping attempt by the Dolphins, Hesseman took advantage of a traditional 3-point play and tied the game 38-all. Creating the prettiest passing play that Ranger fans have seen all year, Jess Reid threw a long ball to rookie Brenda Kramer who then dished to Del Vecchio who was patiently waiting under the arch. Drew took the lead at 41-38.

A battle had begun as Cornato showed off her distance once again by sinking a deep three-point shot with just over ten minutes remaining. The Rangers, up 48-44, were met with retaliation. Ciara Clark brought the Dolphins back with a 3-point shot to which the Rangers responded with a cross-court bomb from Barber to Del Vecchio for a lay-in. The Rangers were up by three at 52-49.

Barber hit two free-throws after being fouled by Lauren Pecordani, to give Drew a five-point lead with less than one minute to go in the game.  A shaky final minute and a missed three-pointer by Clark gave Drew their first playoff victory since the 04-05 season.

For the Dolphins, Hesseman notched a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Koerner finished 4-8 from three-point range and 4-4 from the free throw line accounting for 16 points total.  Clark scored 10 points for the Dolphins and was a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line.  The Dolphins, as a team, shot 66.7 from the line.  Pecordani had six steals as the Dolphins finished their 09-10 campaign, 18-10.

For the Rangers, Cornato led with 14 points.  Barber played a full 40:00 and flirted with a triple double with nine points, nine boards, and seven assists.  Del Vecchio finished with 13 for the Rangers who will take on the No. 6 NYU Violets, Saturday at 7:00pm at host No. 1 Steven's Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ.

A note to Ranger fans:  The annual St. Patricks Day Celebration in Hoboken will be going on all day on Saturday so please allow extra time if you plan on traveling to Steven's.  Follow this link for directions to Steven's.  Please consider using NJ Transit as an option as Hoboken will be extra congested due to the St. Patrick's Day Festivities.
