Bodden’s 4-RBI Afternoon Propels Rangers Over Beavers, 8-3

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (April 22, 2010)- Rookie shortstop Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) went 2-for-4 against the City College of New York Beavers Thursday afternoon at MCU Park in Brooklyn. Bodden drove in half of the Rangers eight runs while five different pitchers combined for seven strikeouts and just two walks.

The Beavers put up a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and the two squads traded scores in the third. The Rangers began the fifth inning down 2-1 but after RBI-drives from Bodden and senior first baseman Matt McGrath (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) came out on top 3-2.

Lefty Evan Martens (Avon Conn./Avon) retired the Beavers with ease in the bottom half of the frame, allowing just one hit.

The Rangers padded their run total in the top of the sixth, busting the game open with five runs off of six hits. Sophomore third baseman Peter Tuchol (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and Steve DeBonis(Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) led the frame off with back-to-back base-hits. Tuchol would eventually score on an RBI-walk from rookie second baseman Chris DelMaestro (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough).

Bodden came through again for the Rangers with a double in the gap good for two more runs. Senior pinch hitter David Kaplow (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) drove in DelMaestro and Bodden with a clutch base-hit up the middle.

The Beavers tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t get anything going against the Rangers’ pitching staff. Senior Tom Clark (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) who took over in the sixth, allowed just three hits and struck out three in two innings of work. Rookie Tom Koontz(Allentown, N.J./Allentown) and junior Dan Blum (Cambridge Mass./Prospect Hill Academy) put up hitless eighth and ninth innings to close out the non-conference victory for the Rangers.

Rookie center fielder Neil Cashes (Little Silver, N.J./Redbank) went 4-5 with four bunt singles.

For the Beavers, sophomore infielder Daniel Perez lead the team with a 2-4 performance while Ruben Angeles drove in two. Dave Titor took the loss on the hill falling to 1-2 on the season.

Drew travels to Bethlehem, Pa. this weekend for a three-game Landmark Conference set against the Moravian Greyhounds.
