Rangers Advance with 5-0 over Lycoming

TOWSON, Md. (May 14, 2010) – Drew extended its winning streak to ten as they defeated Lycoming College 5-0 at the Goucher College Tennis Center this afternoon. The win sets up a second-round matchup with regional host, Johns Hopkins at 10:00 AM tomorrow.

Drew (14-6) got their first ever NCAA Tournament victory today and their seventh shutout of the 2010 season. The Rangers were powered, as they have been all year long, by their doubles play. The three victories today bring their season total up to 47 while boasting nearly an .800 winning percentage.

Raul Smego (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristo Rey) and his brother Elliot Smego (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristo Rey) bounced back after having their seven-match winning streak snapped last Saturday. Their 8-1 win, coupled with an 8-3 number three doubles win by Matt Imbo (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and Victor Kolarov (Sofia Bulgaria/FPELS William Shakespeare), gave the Rangers a quick 2-0 lead.

Matt Brisotti (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck) paired with Ryan Johnson (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) for the first time this season and the duo pulled out an 8-5 win in number two doubles to give Drew a commanding, 3-0 lead.

Raul Smego took care of business picking up his fifth straight win at number one singles to put the Rangers within one. Team co-captain Jon Pransky (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott) was the next to finish and sealed the program’s first NCAA tournament win with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Phillip Shannon.

The Rangers next game will be in the same location as Friday as they take on the hometown Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins. Live Stats will be available morning match scheduled to start at 10:00 AM
