MADISON, N.J. (November 20, 2011) – The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) put on their annual Ranger Run on Sunday afternoon where nearly 50 runners ran through the scenic Drew University Campus in a 5K walk/run.
The committee, comprised of representatives from each of the 18 varsity sports at Drew, raised money for a Kaiya Barber, local girl with cerebral palsy. With her medical care costs going up, the student-athletes raised over 300 dollars at the event to go towards her medical expenses.
“At the beginning of each year we give the members of SAAC the opportunity to bring in any cause that they know of or feel particularly passionate about,” explained SAAC President and women's soccer player Abby Dingle. “This year, RJ Voorman, a member of the Men's soccer team, brought us the information about Kaiya. We decided that this was the best option for us to fundraise for this year.”
Senior cross country runner Steven Monteleone was the first finisher in the race, coming in with a time of 17:05. Ironically he was just three seconds off the course record set by assistant coach Josh Clough two years ago. On the women's side Corrine Schooch was the first female finisher with a time of 22:18. Former SAAC treasurer and women's basketball player Jess Reid was the second female finisher with a time of 23:48.
“The event was a great success and exciting to see Steve come so close to the course record” said Dingle. “Everyone who came out seemed to really enjoy themselves and I really hope that the Ranger Run will continue to be a yearly event hosted by SAAC.”
