MADISON, N.J. (November 4, 2011) – The Drew University men's soccer, women's soccer and field hockey teams concluded the 2
nd Annual Breast Cancer Awareness campaign with a check presentation to the Morristown Medical Center Breast Cancer fund last week.
Over the course of the month of October, the Rangers collected donations for their “Honor Banner” that was hung at both of the Breast Cancer Awareness games on October 11
th and 12
th. Student-Athletes, families and friends donated $10 for a space on the banner and wrote messages added pictures in honor of those affected by breast cancer.
The Drew Athletic department raised 800 dollars through the honor banner, donations and baked goods that were sold during the games. Both the women's teams wore pink jersey's and the men's soccer team was geared up with pink arm bands. To cap off the special nights, all three of the Ranger athletic teams pulled out shutout wins.
“This was something that we came up with as a department last year and was a cause that was personal to many of us in the department,” said Head Women's Soccer Coach
Christa Racine. “Each year we hope to make the banner bigger and ultimately raise more money for a great cause,” added Racine.
Members of each of the teams that participated presented a check to representatives from the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center in the Drew Athletics offices last week.
“It's so heartening to see all the survivors helping those who are now fighting cancer, and to see Drew student-athletes and their families, many of whom live elsewhere, coming together to support a vital community resource for the second year in a row,” said Eileen Heltzer, director of annual giving for the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center. “Thank you for being amazing neighbors.”
