Rangers Pull Away Late to Win Spring Fling Championship

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 15, 2012) – The Drew women's lacrosse team won their third-straight contest this afternoon with a late rally, defeating Nazareth (1-2) 19-13 this afternoon in the Spring Fling Championship Game. Senior Aileen Musynske (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) scored a career-high six goals and recorded an assist to help the Rangers improve to 3-3.

It was the Golden Flyers who took the initial control of the contest early on by scoring the game's first three goals. The Rangers finally got on the scoreboard the first of four goals by freshman Nikki Kleiman (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) with 25:19 remaining in the first half.

The Nazareth offense responded with two goals by Alyssa Johnston who scored four of her six goals in the first nine minutes of play. The Rangers battled back and scored three-straight goals to tie the game up at five with 16:59 left in the period. Drew went on to score four of the next five goals to gain their first lead of the game and eventually take a 10-8 lead into halftime.

Three-straight goals by Nazareth to start the second half tied the game a 10 all and the two teams went on to exchange the next four goals to tie the game for the final time at 12 with 22:16 left in the game. Senior Lyndsay Rossi (Pennington, N.J./Pennington School) scored the go-ahead goal on a free-position shot at the 18:42 mark as part of a three-goal run to recapture the lead. Rossi finished the game with a hat trick and a career-high three assists.

The Rangers scored eight of the final nine goals in of the game to capture the Spring Fling Championship. Over the three-day span in West Palm Beach, the Rangers found the back of the cage a total of 54 times.

Sophomore Christiana Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) played all 60 minutes in cage for the Rangers, making five saves for her third-consecutive win.

The Rangers will return to Madison and prepare for Wellesley College who comes to Ranger Stadium on Monday afternoon at 4:30.
