Box Score TOWSON, Md. (January 19, 2012) – The Drew women's basketball team (6-11, 2-4 Landmark) put forth its second-best shooting performance of the season, topping conference foe, Goucher (5-11, 1-5 Landmark), 59-42 in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center this evening.
The Rangers, as a team, shot 52 percent from the field in the first half of play and 44 percent from floor for the game. This season the Rangers are 4-1 when shooting 40 percent or more as a team.
Freshman
Courtney Stephens (Pikesville, Md./Gerstell Academy) led a trio of Rangers in double figures with 13 points and also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Classmate
Erin Howard (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic) added 10 points and totaled a game-high five blocks in the win. The five denials by Howard are the most by a Ranger since 2010 when Eden Blazovic turned back five shots on the road against Juniata.
Goucher's Amaka Ezeani was 6-of-12 from the floor and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to go along with her 12 points. Sharnell Huff was the only other Gopher in double figures, scoring 11 points including a 3-for-5 effort from the three-point line.
With the only tie coming on the second basket of the game, the Rangers hit the ground running and did not allow a tie or relinquish a lead for the remainder of the contest. Drew took a commanding, 34-17 lead into halftime. The 17 points by Goucher was the lowest first half total by an opponent this season.
The Drew defense did not allow the Gophers to get back into the game in the second half, forcing 25 turnovers for the game, compared to 21 given away by the Rangers. Goucher owned a 35-34 advantage in rebounds but the Rangers were able to score 19 points off the 25 Gopher turnovers.
Senior
Jennifer Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City) rounded out the Drew double-digit scores, chipping in 12 points and tying a career-high with five steals.
The Rangers will be on the road on Wednesday night to take on Merchant Marine at 7:00 p.m. in King's Point, N.Y.
