Box Score BETHLEHEM, Pa. (January 9, 2013) – Despite outscoring previously ranked Moravian College (13-1, 4-0 Landmark) in the second half, the Drew women's basketball team lost 73-51 on the road this evening. The loss drops the Rangers to 5-9 on the year and 1-2 in conference play.
Freshman
Courtney Stephens (Pikesville, Md./Gerstell Academy) led the Rangers with 12 points and tied for a game-high eight rebounds including four on the offensive end. Classmate
Erin Howard (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic) was the only other Ranger in double figures as she added 11 points on 5-of-17 shooting.
Moravian forward Alexis Wright led all scorers with 19 points and also pulled down seven rebounds. Katie O'Rourke was 4-of-8 from the floor, including a 5-for-5 effort from the free throw line, for 13 points.
The first half proved to be the story of the game as Moravian used a 21-0 run midway through the first half, to open up a 35-9 lead with 2:12 remaining in the game. Drew scored the next five points following the run thanks to a layup by
Jeramie Barletta (Madison, N.J./Madison) and a 3-pointer by
Jennifer Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City) to narrow the lead to 21 with 1:34 left. Despite the late charge, the Greyhounds took a 38-14 lead into the halftime break.
The Greyhounds did not relinquish a lead less than 20 points in the second half but were actually outscored by the Rangers, 37-35. For the game, Drew shot 35 percent from the field including a 40 percent effort in the second half of play. Moravian held 47-41 rebounding advantage of Drew and committed eight less turnovers for the game.
The Rangers will continue Landmark Conference play on Saturday when they welcome Juniata to Baldwin Gym. The women's will kick-off a Landmark doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
