Smego Wins Third Player of the Year Award

TOWSON, Md. (April 30, 2013) – Senior Raul Smego (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristo Rey) was named the 2013 Landmark Conference Player of the Year award this afternoon. Freshman Hunter Lathrop (South Londonderry, Vt./Stratton Mountain School) and Djedjy Hill (Haiti/Rancocas Valley) were both Second Team All-Conference selections in singles.

Smego wins the award for the third-straight season, helping the Rangers to their sixth-straight Landmark Conference Championship. Along with the conference's top honor, he was a First Team All-Conference selection in both singles and doubles for the fourth-straight season. Smego competed at both No. 1 and 2 singles this season finishing 9-5 in dual matches during the regular season. He lost just one conference match this year and wrapped up play in the Landmark with a 23-2 career record. He primarily teamed up with Hill in doubles and the duo went 6-0 together against conference opponents.

Hill, a senior, was recognized by the league for the first time in his career. With Smego, he was a First Team All-Conference selection in doubles and a Second Team All-Conference selection in singles. In singles play he went 4-2 against conference opponents primarily playing at the number three position. He posted a 5-5 dual match record in 2013 and finishes his career with a record of 16-13.

Lathrop was an impact freshman for the Rangers this season and was a Second Team All-Conference selection in singles. He lost only one conference match in his first year on campus and had a team-high 13 wins in dual matches. His 16 wins including tournament play are the seventh most all-time in a single season in school history. In the Landmark Conference Championship he clinched the match, winning his second singles match to give the Rangers a 5-4 win over Scranton.

The Landmark crown earns the men's tennis team an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament taking place May 10th-12th.
