MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (May 10, 2013) – The Drew University men's tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 5-2 win over Farmingdale St. (12-2) this afternoon. The Rangers will take on regional host, Middlebury tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
The Rangers fell behind 2-1 after doubles play with their only win coming at the number one position. The duo of
Raul Smego (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristo Rey) and
Djedjy Hill (Haiti/Rancocas Valley) won 8-4 over Justin Vijungco and Justin Musalo. The win was the 63
rd doubles win of Smego's career, tying the school record held by former teammate
Matt Brisotti.
The Rangers were dominant in singles play and clinched their 12
th victory of the season. Drew closed the match out by recording four, straight-set wins in singles.
Freshman
Hunter Lathrop (South Londonderry, Vt./Stratton Mountain School) defeated Musalo, 6-2, 6-2 in number two doubles. Hill and freshman
Adam Clark (Fremont, Calif./John F. Kennedy) won their matches at the three and five positions respectively to put the Rangers up 4-2.
Smego clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Vijugco in number one singles.
The Rangers advance to the second round for the second-straight season and will take on host, Middlebury College at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow.
