MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (May 11, 2013) – The Drew University men's tennis team had its season come to an end this afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Regional host, Middlebury (18-4) advanced with a 5-0 win over the Rangers.
The Rangers conclude their season with a record of 12-7, marking their eighth-straight season under Head Coach Jeff Brandes with 12 or more wins. Middlebury will advance and take on Johns Hopkins in the regional final on Sunday at noon.
Middlebury jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play, dropping just seven games. Spencer Lunghino and Palmer Campbell were 8-1 winners at the number three position to start things off. Brantner Jones and Teddy Fitzgibbons earned an 8-4 victory over
Hunter Lathrop (South Londonderry, Vt./Stratton Mountain School) and
Matt Imbo (Islip, N.Y./Islip) in the number slot to make it an 8-4 match. The lead grew to 3-0 when Alex Johnston and Andrew Lebovitz topped
Raul Smego (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristo Rey) and
Djedjy Hill (Haiti/Rancocas Valley) 8-2 at number one
Lunghino earned his second win of the day, defeating Imbo 6-2, 6-1 at #4 singles to put his team one win away from clinching the match. Jones sealed the win at #2, topping Lathrop 6-1, 6-0.
