Athletics Department Announces Yearly Awards

MADISON, N.J. (May 9, 2013) – The Drew University Athletic Department hosted its annual awards ceremony on Tuesday night at the Dorothy Young Center for Performing Arts. The annual ceremony announces team MVPs and special yearly awards.

Senior cross country runner, Jennifer Van Wingerden (Augusta, N.J./High Point Regional) and men's tennis senior Raul Smego (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristo Rey) took home the Career Athlete of the Year Awards at the end of the night. The prestigious honor is given to a male and female athlete who displays the highest sportsmanship, commitment, leadership, outstanding performance, breadth of participation, and achievement over the course of their careers. Van Wingerden is the most decorated women's cross country runner in school history and Smego has racked up three-consecutive Landmark Conference Player of the Year Awards.

The Vince Masco Male and Female Athlete of the Year Awards were presented to fencer James Weiss, Somers, N.Y./Somers) and freshman soccer player, Emma Campbell (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill). Weiss was a national qualifier for the second time and Campbell was the first women's soccer player to win both the Landmark Conference Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards in the same season.

The Larry Horner Athletic Leadership award recognizes student-athletes for their commitment to the promotion and display of the values of sportsmanship, as well as the leadership role they assume for the benefit of their teammates and the success of the team. Senior baseball player Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) and senior Scott Humphreys (Newark, Del./Sanford School) were co-male winners. Two-sport athlete Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.) was the female winner. Gagliano was also the Field Hockey Most Valuable player after being named the sport's Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

The Sherman Plato Young Award, the department's top academic award, had two recipients. Three-sport athlete, Jeramie Barletta (Madison, N.J./Madison) and cross-country runner Tim Barnum (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) were the 2013 recipients. Barletta was also named the 2013 Softball Most Valuable Player.

The Paul Seymour Memorial Service Award was given to sophomore Marissa Mastrocola, a student-worker in the athletic communications office. The award is given annual to the student who's spirit, support, and aid to the entire department has been exemplary and  has gone above and beyond any assigned duty.

The Eleanor Mason and Harry Simester Intramural Service Awards were given out to Brooke Kaufman and Jonathan Pena who displayed outstanding contributions to the Drew University Intramural Department.
