A little known group among Drew University's 306 student athletes has big plans for the 2013-14 school year. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is comprised of representatives from each of the 19 varsity athletic teams at Drew and will be raising money for Katy's Courage throughout the school year.
This past Monday, SAAC voted and announced that they will be raising funds for Katy's Courage, a non-for profit organization dedicated to education and support for families and children through scholarships, support for children's bereavement counseling and pediatric cancer research. Katy's Courage honors Katy Stewart, a precious little girl who inspired all who knew her throughout her lifetime. She died of a rare pediatric cancer at 12 years young.
Last year the group raised money for a Kayla Barber, a local girl with cerebral palsy. Two years ago SAAC raised funds for a local man that suffered a traumatic brain injury.
"We typically like to raise funds for causes that are close to home," said SAAC President and women's soccer senior,
Caroline Kuras. "We became aware of Katy's Courage through one of our members and we are excited to contribute to this wonderful cause."
The mission of SAAC is to foster relationships with other groups at Drew by holding campus-wide events in hopes of raising school spirit. Another major focus of the group is choosing an annual cause to fundraise for throughout the school year.
The group has an aggressive fall event schedule kicking off with a Ranger Barbeque Bash on September 20
th at 8:00 p.m. in Ranger Stadium. Students, fans, staff and the community are welcome and invited to stay for a movie on the turf after. In October, the annual prison ball tournament will take place in Baldwin Gym with a date to be announced. In support of Breast Cancer Awareness month, student-athletes will participate in a Breast Cancer walk and also help out with a blood drive on campus.
One of the most anticipated events on campus is the annual Mr. Drew competition. A wildly entertaining night pits some of Drew's finest men against each other in an all-male beauty pageant. This year's competition is scheduled for the spring along with the annual Ranger Run.
Fans will spot a SAAC member at every Drew athletics home event, selling 50/50 tickets, passing out schedule cards and of course cheering on the Rangers.
