Women's Lacrosse Raises Over $10,000 For Cancer Research

Madison, N.J. (February 8, 2014) – This past weekend the Drew University Women's Lacrosse Team participated in the 2014 New Jersey installment of Cycle For Survival. The team traveled to Summit, N.J. to take part in the four-hour relay style bike-a-thon.

Cycle For Survival is an indoor team cycling event that provides a way to help raise money for rare cancers that was started by Jennifer Goodwin Linn who was diagnosed with sarcoma in 2004 and lost her battle with the disease in 2011.

According to the National Institutes of Health a "rare cancer" is one with a prevalence of fewer than 200,000 affected individuals in the United States. Since 2007, Cycle For Survival has raised over $42 million, all of which has been donated to cancer research.

The team was riding in honor of George Kraynak, the late husband of Head Coach Julia Steier, who lost his battle with Fibrolamellar Carcinoma in November of 2013.

The girls were split into teams of four, with each player riding for one hour. The Rangers were able to raise over $10,600 for the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Coach Steier was hand selected to ride the Jennifer Goodwin Linn Memorial Bike at the event, in honor of her husband.

The Drew Women's Lacrosse team will be continuing to accept donations to the cause until April 1, 2014. For more information on the event and how to aid the team in their efforts to help raise money for cancer research, please email Coach Steier at jsteier@drew.edu.
