The Rangers hosted 60 children ranging from five to 17 years old on the court in Trenton, and conducted friendly games of tennis and interactive matches between the Drew players and the kids attending the clinic.
"Some people think you need a lot of money to play the sport year round," said head coach
Matthew Brisotti. "These kids don't necessarily come from that background, but they love the sport and want to pursue a future on the high school and college levels. Our players had a fun time sharing their love of the sport with these kids."
The tennis matches were played with music playing in the background and a food table waiting to be enjoyed outside the fences.
Brisotti hopes Monday's event was the stepping-stone toward a long-term partnership with the NJTLT. Drew plans on sponsoring a brick in the gazebo at the Cadwalader Courts, and has invited the NJTLT to visit campus and play on the courts in Madison.
Drew assistant tennis coach
Michelle Gbelama is the program director at the NJTLT and relayed the gratitude felt by the children in attendance on Monday.
"The Rangers were instrumental in teaching tennis skills and relaying the importance of having fun while doing so," Gbelama said. "The NJTL of Trenton realizes that there are numerous organizations that seek the backing of dedicated, caring and generous individuals like the Drew student-athletes. We are extremely delighted that they chose to support our program and we do not take the generosity for granted. With their help we can continue to make a difference in the lives of children and in the community they live."
About The National Junior Tennis and Learning of TrentonNational Junior Tennis & Learning of Trenton, Inc. (NJTLT), affiliated with the United States Tennis Association (USTA), is a nonprofit community organization dedicated to improving the lives of youths from broad socio-economic and cultural backgrounds with programs based on the ideals of tennis legend Arthur Ashe. It is part of the National Junior Tennis and Learning network of 620 chapters with 350,000 participants founded in 1969 by Ashe, Charlie Pasarell and Sheridan Snyder as the National Junior Tennis League.
NJTLT, established in 1975 as the National Junior Tennis League of Trenton, today serves some 2,500 young people in the greater Trenton area, many of whom are at risk, with year-round access to its award-winning Nutrition, Education and Tennis Support (NETS) programs that often provide life-changing experiences. In a recovering-but-still fragile economy, the NETS programs have never been more essential or in greater demand. Management's challenge will be to meet these needs effectively and responsibly.
NJTLT has grown rapidly in size and effectiveness in recent years, and its accomplishments have been repeatedly honored at the national, regional and local level, including being named by the USTA in 2005 and 2007 as the NJTL national chapter of the year.
