No. 7: Klinger's Buzzer Beater Gives Men's Basketball Overtime Win at Juniata A breakout season for a men's basketball star is not quite complete without a signature moment. It can come in the form of a dominating statistical performance, an earth-shattering dunk or a heart-stopping shot to clinch a game in the final seconds.
That moment for sophomore guard
Mike Klinger came on Jan. 18, 2014 at Juniata College. The Rangers were locked in a battle with the Eagles on the road, and extra time was needed to decide a winner after a 53-53 tie at the end of regulation.
Juniata struck first in overtime with back-to-back layups to take a four-point lead. Junior forward
Chris Capelli continued the Rangers' hot shooting from distance, hitting Drew's seventh three-pointer of the contest to cut the Eagles' lead to one. After a Juniata jumper, Klinger nailed the squad's eighth triple to knot the game again at 59-all.
The two sides would trade free throws to keep the score tied, but Juniata again looked to have the upper hand by converting a layup with just 3.5 seconds left on the clock for the 63-61 lead. The Eagles' staff called a timeout, and their plan seamed simple enough: Prevent
Mike Klinger from winning the game.
That plan proved difficult to execute.
Klinger caught the inbound pass, cleared a lane to just outside the right corner of the three-point arc, and launched a running shot that soared through the air as the buzzer sounded. The ball swished through the rim and gently swayed the net in only the way a buzzer-beating, game-winning shot can do. The Rangers mobbed Klinger on the court to celebrate a big Landmark Conference victory.
Klinger scored a team-high 17 points in the overtime victory, while adding three assists and two steals.
The rising junior will return to Madison this winter after averaging 19.4 points per game in 2013-14, which ranked second in the Landmark Conference. He now has 818 career points and will enter the new season 182 points away from becoming the 18
th member of the 1,000-Point Club for Drew University Men's Basketball.
