No. 10: Women's Basketball Wins Double-OT Thriller at Goucher College The site was Towson, Maryland on Feb. 15, 2014. The Rangers had just three games remaining in the regular season and were in the thick of the Landmark Conference playoff race. The only thing more exciting than the implications of the game was the finish; in regulation time, in overtime, and finally, double overtime.
Some hot shooting from Goucher helped the home team take the lead into halftime and eventually led 37-25 lead with 16:50 left to play in the game. The Rangers countered with a 10-2 run and cut the Gopher advantage to just five points with 13:18 to play. But with 8:09 showing on the clock, the Gophers opened their largest lead of the game 52-38.
Drew refused to quit and put together a 15-1 run over the final eight-minute stretch to knot the game 53-53. Freshman guard
Hannah Miller was the hot hand that forced overtime after the dramatic comeback. The Drew rookie hit a jumper in the paint with 1:56 left and her next jump shot from a little farther out was also true to force extra time.
In the first overtime, it was the Gophers' turn for some dramatics. Drew sophomore swing
Courtney Stephens scored the go-ahead lay-up with 1:26 to play in OT to give the Rangers a 59-57 advantage. After three free throws from junior guard
Breana Wilson, the Gophers hit a three-pointer to beat the buzzer and tie the game again, 62-62, to force a second overtime.
The scoring was limited in the second OT as the two sides grinded out the back-and-forth battle. Many of the starters neared 50 minutes of action toward the end of the contest. The Rangers traded baskets with Goucher before Stephens, who scored four of Drew's six points in the second overtime, netted the eventual game-winning points with two free throws with 1:43 to play.
The final 1:43 was a game of survival as both teams struggled to find the hoop. Senior forward
Logan Cavanaugh helped the Rangers' defensive cause with a block down the stretch and Drew defended another three-pointer at the buzzer. This time the shot was off target and the Rangers held on for a slim, double-overtime conference victory on the road.
Wilson led the Blue & Green with 17 points, while Miller tossed in 15. Stephens finished with eight points and 14 rebounds and Cavanaugh scored a career-high 12 points to go with eight boards and five blocks.
The win moved the Rangers to 12-11 on the season and put them in a tie for the fourth and final playoff spot heading into the final week of the regular season.
