Drew Tops RU-Camden, Punches Ticket to ECAC Semis

CAMDEN, N.J. (Nov. 13, 2016) – Freshman Tyler Kwaak's late-game heroics sent the Drew University men's soccer team to the ECAC Division III Championship semifinals with a 1-0 win at overall top-seed and host Rutgers-Camden in Sunday afternoon's quarterfinal.

Playoff Picture: The No. 2 seed in Region 1, the Rangers (12-5-3) make history as one of the first teams to participate in the inaugural ECAC Division III Championship Final Four, facing off against Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 11:00 a.m in the first semifinal. Lebanon Valley College, the No. 1 seed from Region 2, will host the semifinal/championship weekend on Nov. 19-20 and will take on William Paterson University in the other semifinal at 2:00 p.m.

The 2016 season marks the first year the ECAC will crown one champion instead of multiple regional champions, an honor Drew won in 1975, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997 and 2009. The Rangers are 27-14- 3 all-time in 24 ECAC postseason appearances.

Top Performers: Senior forward Sebastien Etta-Ashu combined with Kwaak on the lone goal of the game in the 87th minute, breaking a scoreless stalemate fast approaching overtime. Etta-Ashu slotted a pass back from the left side of the field, finding Kwaak open at the top of the 18-yard box. The freshman then fired a low screamer into the left side of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Turning Point: One goal was enough for the Rangers to win thanks to 90 minutes worth of clean sheet turned in by freshman goalkeeper Jason Adamo, who made three saves for his second career win and first career shutout. All three of his saves came in the second half, including back-to-back stops in the 80th and 81st minutes.

Other Highlights: Etta-Ashu and freshman Andy Imoh paced the offense with two shots on target apiece. Eight different Rangers got in on the attack with a shot recorded in the ECAC quarterfinal victory over the Scarlet Raptors (9-9-4).

Stat Sheet: Drew outshot Rutgers-Camden 14-8, while holding a similar advantage in shots on goal (9-3). James Brett made eight saves for the Scarlet Raptors. Rutgers-Camden took more corners, 6-2, but was also flagged for five offside calls to Drew's one.

Up Next: The Rangers await the final score of the final quarterfinal on Sunday before the ECAC determines the matchups and location of the semifinal and championship games on Nov. 19-20. Stay tuned to DrewRangers.com and @GoDrewRangers on twitter for updates.
