Records Fall On Opening Day of Ranger Invitational

Results

MADISON, N.J. –
The Drew University men's and women's swimming & diving teams set seven school records on Friday, as the Ranger Invitational got underway at Kirby Pool.  Mal Vishwanath (Bangalore, India) established three program marks and swam an NCAA "B" qualifying time in the 1650 yard freestyle.

Vishwanath broke her own 1650 and 1000 freestyle records for the second time this season.  Her time of 17:09.51, which was well beyond the NCAA "B" standard, established a new Landmark Conference best.  Vishwanath's 1000-yard split of 10:22.21 was also better than her previous program mark.  She then set her third school record of the day in the 400 yard individual medley, notching a 4:35.47 clocking.

Four records also fell on the men's side.  Garrett Pilkington (West Milford, N.J.) posted a 1000-yard split of 10:09.28 en route to a 16:52.50 clocking in the 1650 freestyle.  He later won the 400 individual medley in 4:27.07.

Matheus Macena (Sao Paulo, Brazil), meanwhile, established a new standard of 51.54 seconds in the 100 yard butterfly.  He then joined with Michael Ma (Redwood City, Calif.), Ryan Underwood (Etters, Pa.) and Jack Mahoney (Erie, Pa.) to post a record-setting time of 1:36.35 in the 200 yard medley relay.   That quartet also took first in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:27.65) and 400 yard medley relay (3:36.50).

Individually, Mahoney picked up wins in the 50 yard freestyle (21.90) and 200 yard freestyle (1:44.92), while Ma earned the victory in the 200 yard individual medley (1:58.30).

On the women's side, Stephanie Cushman (Brick, N.J.) took first in the 200 individual medley with a 2:14.50 clocking, while Jenny Stein's (Calabasas, Calif.) time of 24.60 seconds was good for the victory in the 50 freestyle.  The Rangers also won all three relays.  Stein, Cushman, Katie Jefferson (Kameula, Hawaii) and Eve Morel (Bourgogne, France) posted a time of 1:52.17 in the 200 medley relay, while the 200 freestyle relay squad of Stein, Morel, Vishwanath and Jamie Riffel (New Providence, N.J.) notched a 1:39.79 clocking.  Stein, Cushman, Morel and Vishwanath, meanwhile, finished the 400 medley relay in 4:03.63.

Competition at the Ranger Invitational will conclude on Saturday.  The swimming sessions will begin at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., with the diving events scheduled to get underway at 12 p.m.
