All-Landmark Conference Team
TOWSON, Md. - Coming off a second-straight 20-win season and third-consecutive conference playoff berth, the Drew University men's basketball squad was well-represented on the All-Landmark Conference Team.
Drew captured three of the four major awards while a pair of Rangers earned All-Landmark Conference recognition.
For the second year in a row, senior guard
Riley Collins has been honored as the Landmark Conference Player of the Year. Junior forward
Malachi Walker, Jr. landed Defensive Player of the Year recognition while freshman forward
Howard McBurnie, Jr. was tabbed Rookie of the Year. In addition, Collins was named to the All-Landmark Conference First Team along with junior forward
Lybrant Robinson.
Collins becomes just the second player in Landmark Conference men's basketball history to be named Player of the Year more than once. He also collected his fourth All-Landmark Conference honor, picking up first-team accolades for the third straight season, and is the first Ranger to earn four All-Landmark awards.
A five-time Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, Collins has registered another tremendous all-around season and currently leads the conference in scoring (19.6 ppg), steals (2.2 spg), and 3-pointers made (65) while ranking third in assists (4.8 apg) and fifth in free-throw percentage (81.2%). He has scored in double figures in all 26 games this season and has posted eight 25-point games, including a pair of 30-point outings. Collins also distributed at least five assists in 13 outings. In addition, he tied a school record with seven steals in a win over Wilkes. For his career, Collins is Drew's all-time leader in assists (463) and 3-pointers (266), and he ranks second in both points (1,906) and steals (208).
Walker is the second Ranger in as many years to be named Defensive Player of the Year after
Nate Aldrich C'19 won the same award last season. He has made his mark as a prolific shot blocker and has shattered the Landmark Conference record for blocks in a season with 87. With 3.35 blocks per game, he leads the Landmark Conference and ranks third in Division III.Â
Throughout the season, Walker has blocked at least one shot in all 26 games. He has swatted five or more shots in six different games, including a career-high eight rejections versus Susquehanna. Walker is second on the team and fifth in the conference in rebounding with 7.1 boards per game and has reached double figures in rebounds seven times. In addition, he has contributed offensively as the team's fifth-leading scorer, averaging 6.7 points per game.
McBurnie becomes Drew's third Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year and the second in four years, as Collins won the same award in 2017. He has been the top rebounder and one of the squad's leading scorers throughout the season, averaging 9.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. In addition, he ranks second among the Rangers in blocked shots (22). He currently leads the Rangers with 7.6 rebounds per game and has grabbed 10 or more boards in eight different contests. He has also scored in double figures in 12 games. Among the Landmark Conference leaders, McBurnie ranks fourth in rebounding and fifth in blocks (0.8 bpg).
Robinson has provided Drew with an outstanding performer in his first season with the team after coming to Madison as a transfer this year. He is currently the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 15.7 points per game, and is second on the squad in 3-pointers made (52). A two-time Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, he has posted five 20-point games and has hit a 3-pointer in all but two of his 24 games. He scored 28 points in a win over Saint Elizabeth in which he shot 5-for-6 from 3-point range, and he also went 6-for-8 from beyond the arc while scoring 25 points in a victory over Rutgers-Newark.
The Rangers finished the regular season 20-5 - just the second 20-win season in team history - and 11-3 in the Landmark Conference, tying for first in the conference standings and earning the No. 2 seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament. The Rangers have received a berth in the ECAC Championships for the third year in a row and received a first-round bye. Drew will take on Hood or Penn State Altoona in the quarterfinal round on Friday at Gwynedd Mercy University starting at 8 p.m.
